London and Barcelona were basically tied with speeds of 22.7Mbps down and 29.1Mbps up. Of these test spots, New York was the slowest, averaging 16.8Mbps down and 22.3Mbps up. We tested the hotspot in Barcelona, London, New York, Norway, and Prague. The Solis Lite offers global band support on FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, and WCDMA. To be honest, we don't find the smart features on the Solis X to be particularly helpful and didn't miss them while testing the Solis Lite. The Solis Lite, on the other hand, is a basic Wi-Fi hotspot with no extra features. What makes the Solis Lite different from the Solis X? The Solis X is a "smart hotspot" that packs a remote-enabled camera along with a speaker and microphone for a built-in voice assistant. The hotspot can also act as a power bank to charge your phone, though it will do so slowly, at 5V/1A. We tested the hotspot over 10 days, with three devices connected at all times, and never needed to recharge over the course of the day, managing to get around 12 to 13 hours of use on average. A label with a QR code and the hotspot's password sits on the bottom of the device.īattery life is exceptional. There's a single USB-C port on the side to charge the 4,700mAh battery the port is surrounded by a narrow lip that makes it difficult to use many third-party cables, although Skyroam includes a short cord in the box. On the top of the hotspot you'll find a recessed power button, a vertical LED stripe for a visual indication of remaining battery life, and three small red lights that show connectivity and data transfers. At 5.44 ounces, it won't weigh your pocket down much more than your average cell phone. The Solis Lite is a small orange puck that measures 3.5 inches across and just under an inch tall. That rate includes unlimited data, but if you read the fine print, LTE speeds are throttled after 500MB of use within 24 hours. Roaming Man, meanwhile, offers hotspot rentals for $9.99 per day. The US and Canada offer the most generous access with 1GB of daily LTE access, while most countries offer half as much before speeds are capped. With My Webspot, for instance, rates start around $10 per day depending on your destination and length of rental, and LTE data is capped by region. There are no speed caps on rental or unlimited plans, so you won't be throttled after using a particular amount of data, which is a big benefit compared with many other international hotspot plans. The rental fee includes unlimited global data, and you can opt to have the hotspot shipped directly to your home or pick it up at a handful of international airports. In a change from the $179.99 Solis X, you can also rent the Solis Lite for $8.99 a day (plus tax). Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
